DETROIT – The new 2023 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 from General Motors marks the final chapter in the nearly 70-year history of the famous American sports car.
Those intimately involved in the making of the car have described it as “from another world” and a “utopian version of a sports car”. It is a legal race car designed for the track that allows GM to engineering and draw attention to the Corvette, which Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas believes could represent a $ 7 billion to $ 12 billion franchise for the automaker.
CNBC spoke to several team members about the 2023 Corvette Z06, which features a new 5.5-liter V8 naturally aspirated engine that produces 670 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque – the engine the most powerful of its kind in any production car.
In their own words, here’s what the Corvette team had to say about the vehicle and their roles in GM’s most iconic franchise, including the regular Corvette Stingray.
Tadde Juechter, chief engineer of the Corvette
âWhen I think about why we’re doing this, it’s going to sound funny, but I think about laughing adults. When you put someone in the wheel of a Corvette and put them on a good road and you let it go, that’s what you get, the adults laugh. It’s hard to control and it doesn’t age. You hear the engine, it’s a super passionate machine in the age of transport hominization , there aren’t many unique experiences for drivers, we haven’t created just one, but far into left field.
âThe Stingray is this super nice, smooth, well-developed car. He’s a bit of a bad boy. She has a bit of an advantage. I would say. The character is crisp and clear from the time you start it until every time you drive it. The car’s response speed is a bit of another world. “
Aaron Link, Chief Corvette Development Engineer
âThis car represents to me the utopian version of a sports car. It’s mid-engine architecture and all the inherent goodness that goes with it with a lightweight front end that really amplifies the speed the car spins and then all of it. the traction in the back where you need it, where you can have a huge amount of horsepower. And then the naturally aspirated engine part of that is kind of what everyone has always thought of when you think about that. mid-engined supercar / sports car.And we are doing it, right? And no one else really is.
âSo that’s the beauty for me to be a part of that and to have a big hand in how it’s shaped and shaped and come out⦠It just makes you smile and we say a lot about cars, but that -this is really like you never want it to stop. “
Dustin Gardner, Deputy Chief Engineer of GM Small Block Engines
âThe privilege to work on this as a career is huge. This engine, capable of doing a dedicated Z06 clean sheet built for this mission, and then so proud of the engineering team around it. This thing is a masterpiece of engineering To make a 5.5 liter flat crank, a fully mechanical valve engine that makes 670 horsepower for me is a career highlight …
âJust hearing everything working, feeling the power, all your senses are aroused. It’s just exhilarating and that’s what it’s supposed to do and it does it so well. It’s been my baby ever since. a moment. It’s exciting. “
Harlan Charles, Corvette Product Marketing Manager
âFor me, the Corvette has always been the dream car, so making our customers’ dreams come true. I think with the Stingray we started that, by giving people an exotic mid-engined supercar. But with this- Here, I think that between more bringing the racing experience to the driver⦠The sounds, the way the car feels and behaves, you feel like you are driving the street legal racing car, and basically you It means a lot and then also on a historical scale⦠the future or electrification or whatever, and the future will be there someday, obviously, but let’s just reflect on that moment right now. Here is a pinnacle of technology and a naturally aspirated internal combustion engine.
âIt’s kind of a golden age where we are able to drive and operate an engine that is a real engine and makes you feel alive⦠And so let’s all enjoy it while we can and enjoy. really being able to deliver a supercar like it’s relatively achievable that hardworking people can afford and drive it, and it’s American and people can be proud of having something that’s been designed, built and made right here in America who can take on the best in the world and win.
Josh Holder, Chief Corvette Engineer
âI think we would all say it’s a dream mission, it’s a dream job. Especially anyone who’s a car guy and a gearbox, to get down to business on any car. performance, but especially Corvette, of course, we are biased. And then that The Corvette makes it even more special. So, we are all very happy to have been able to do this job, super appreciated and very luckyâ¦
âThis car is for driving pleasure. It’s for people who love the driving experience, right? The journey as much as the destination. And when you’re in a car, especially this car , the new Z06, you not only feel the freedom to be able to go where you want, but as if you were a superhero, enjoying that freedom because you can go where you want, as you want; face n ‘ anything on the road or the track and to compete and win. that kind of freedom in a car like this is something really special. “
