According to a state investigator’s report, two Seward County residents died after being injured in a Jan. 18 crash on US 34 east of Seward.

Betty Howard, 61, of Beaver Crossing, died on January 20 after suffering two broken legs in the crash, along with other serious injuries.

Ronald Kapke, 62, of Pleasant Dale, died Thursday, according to his obituary. The accident report stated that Kapke suffered head trauma in the collision.

Howard was driving a 1991 Nissan Stanza eastbound on US 34 as it approached the freeway’s intersection with 238th Road around 10:30 a.m. on January 18.

Kapke, who was heading north on 238th Highway in a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado, did not yield to the freeway, according to the accident report from the Seward County Sheriff’s Office.

Witnesses said Howard and Kapke both braked after entering the intersection, where Howard’s Nissan struck the driver’s side of Kapke’s truck, the report said.
