IIHS: Top-Rated Small SUVs for 2022
Every year the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) announces vehicles that qualify for their Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ awards. These awards have been around since 2006 and 2013, respectively, and are given to vehicles that achieve the highest safety ratings in size categories for a given year.
In 2022, to qualify as a Top Safety Pick, a vehicle must have received a “good” rating in tests for driver side small front overlap, passenger side small front overlap, factory side, roof strength and headrest; an “advanced” or “superior” rating for frontal crash prevention available for vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian assessments; and have headlights available that are rated as “acceptable” or “good”.
The standards are the same for the Top Safety Pick+ rating, except that headlights rated “good” or “acceptable” must be standard on the vehicle.
The top-rated small SUVs in the 2021 IIHS included the 2021-22 Chevrolet Trailblazer, 2021-22 Ford Bronco Sport, 2022 Hyundai Tuscon, and 2021 Mazda CX-3.
In the slideshow above, we take a look at the top ten rated small SUVs for 2022, according to IIHS ratings.
