How GM plans to deliver on its promise to be a zero-emission company


NEW YORK: There is no ambiguity about the dangers of climate change from General Motors.

“We’ve been saying for some time that we believe climate change and the climate crisis are real,” said Craig Buchholz, senior vice president of global communications and corporate giving at General Motors. “When you recognize this, everyone has to ask themselves what is their part and what is their part in alleviating this? “

Auto giant plans to convert to fully renewable energy in its US operations by 2025, have 40% of its portfolio of electrical products by 2030, reduce vehicle emissions light by 2035 and achieve carbon neutrality in products and operations by 2040, according to Buchholz.

“We expressed our vision of zero emissions, zero accidents and zero congestion,” he said during a PRDecoded panel session with PRWeek editorial director Steve Barrett.

GM aspires to put everyone in an electric vehicle. But he realizes that automobiles must be affordable. So, by 2025, the automaker plans to have 30 different electric vehicle models in the international market, covering a price range and suitable for different budgets.

“We believe we have the opportunity to really cross the tipping point,” said Buchholz.

He described GM’s four-component card for providing access to electric vehicles. First, public relations comes into play to understand and overcome clients’ psychological barriers against new technology. Second, drivers must have access to charging stations. Third, GM will need to increase its workforce to meet demands, taking into account the purchasing power of consumers. Finally, the company will have to train a qualified workforce.

Environmental communications have been an integral part of the corporate strategy. And Buchholz observed that conversations about carbon neutrality are completely different from what they were three or five years ago.

“It’s actually from my point of view, kind of an exhilarating part, from a communications point of view,” he said.
