GM Shuts Down Bolt EV Production Line After Vehicle Fires

The Bolt EV’s production line has been down since late August, as workers install replacement battery modules for the recalled electric vehicles.

General Motors, one of the world’s largest automakers, has recently been the subject of negative press. The company was forced to recall all of its Bolts EVs because a potential manufacturing defect resulted in the fire of thirteen Bolts. The Bolt EV’s main production line has been on hold since August 23 so workers can service incoming recalled vehicles. GM now expects this production shutdown of new Bolts to last until November 1, two weeks longer than originally planned.

The culprit responsible for the spontaneous fires that occurred in the Bolt EVs has been traced to manufacturing defects in the battery system supplied by LG Battery Solution. According to General Motors, faults in the Bolt EV’s battery system are a torn anode tab and a bent separator which, when present in the same battery cell, can increase the risk of fire. The automaker also noted that the line responsible for producing the Chevrolet Equinox will also be temporarily on hold due to ongoing semiconductor shortages.

General Motors also announced that an agreement has been reached with battery supplier LG Battery Solution to reimburse the automaker for costs associated with the Bolt recall. The estimated $ 2 billion cost of the recall will be offset by $ 1.9 billion on General Motors’ third-quarter balance sheet under the deal.

The recall itself was a blow to General Motors as the company is slowly converting its entire vehicle portfolio to electricity over the next decade. It is not known whether Bolt’s recall will have a substantial effect on public perception of General Motors’ electric vehicles or models of its competitors.
