Ed Bozarth sells his Topeka car dealership
Ed Bozarth’s 55 plus years of car sales in Topeka seem to be coming to an end.
Bozarth Dealer – Bozarth Chevrolet # 1 Buick GMC Cadillac, at 3731 SW Topeka Blvd. – is “under a sales contract,” he told Capital-Journal on Friday.
The identity of the buyer has not been made public.
Bozarth, 78, said he understands that all employees at the company could continue to work there.
âI kind of handpicked the buyer hoping they would retain the pride I have in running the business,â he said. “There are some really wonderful people out there. A lot of them have been with me for 30 or 40 years.”
Ed Bozarth: “It’s my soul”
Bozarth is in the process of taking steps that would reduce the number of dealerships he owns to one in Grand Junction, Colo., He said.
He wouldn’t call what he does a retirement – “I hate that word,” he said – but admitted he had slowed down a bit since he suffered a stroke.
Bozarth said it would be particularly difficult for him to give up the Topeka concession
âIt’s my soul,â he said.
This dealership has won numerous awards over the years in the Best of Topeka competition sponsored by The Capital-Journal.
Bozarth grew up about 12 miles south of where his Topeka dealership is located, he said.
Ed Bozarth started selling cars in 1966
Graduating from Carbondale High School in 1961, he began selling cars in Topeka in June 1966.
Bozarth purchased its current Topeka dealership in 1985 from Kent-Brown Chevrolet Co., according to Topeka Capital-Journal records.
A Capital-Journal article published in 2006 indicated that Bozarth at that time owned eight dealerships in Topeka and Colorado, the state where he now lives.
“He’s a friend of football star John Elway, billionaire Bill Gates and photojournalist Susan Ford, daughter of President Gerald Ford, but he feels most comfortable with his employees and customers,” says the article.
Bozarth’s number of concessions would subsequently increase to 11.
At the same time, it broadened the offer of its Topeka dealership by purchasing Bill Kobach Buick GMC in 2010 and Doug Richert Cadillac in 2019.
A lot of people don’t realize how big a community Topeka is, Bozarth said on Friday.
He said that while he had lived in seven different cities, “I can’t think of a city I would rather live than Topeka, Kansas. Things just can’t get better than Topeka, Kansas.”
