Custom 1986 Chevy Suburban Silverado Double Heads To Mecum Auction

It’s almost Mecum Auctions once again ! The auction takes place March 16-19 in Glendale, Arizona, and live hammer-to-hammer coverage is available through our online subscription service, MotorTrend+ (sign up for a free trial today!), or on your TV via the MotorTrend channel.

There’s something about the Southwest when it comes to trucks. The mics are plentiful there, and based on the wide variety of rigs up for grabs at the Arizona auction, we’re very optimistic about the collection that awaits senior content producer KJ Jones at the Mecum Auctions event in Houston, Texas on April 1. and 2 too.

For the first time ever, KJ will be taking part in a major auto auction, and hopes are high that this upcoming Glendale sale will be a great precursor to what could be the heaviest event on Mecum’s tour.

This teaser highlights a rare dual-rear-wheel Chevy Suburban. The sample seen here is a 1986 model that was not produced by the factory (none of these rare unicorns were), but for many truck fans it is a platform that Chevrolet Brass should have licensed and offered to interested buyers. Can you imagine driving something like this today, with a 6.6-liter Duramax diesel engine under the hood instead of a base big-block Chevy V-8?

Like previous Mecum-Glendale rigs we’ve featured, this ‘burban has no reservations attached to its sale, which should make it worth looking at.

1986 Chevy Suburban Silverado Dually

First off, this 1986 Chevy Suburban is not a true 1-ton double. It is a 3/4 ton rig that has been fitted with a dual rear wheel axle, proper trim fenders, etc. And for Chevrolet Suburban connoisseurs, yes, that’s a Silverado in frame only; Suburbans and pickups share the same chassis, but the truck never officially had Silverado in its name.

Big Block Chevrolet Power

A 7.4-litre (454 ci) Chevrolet big-block engine sits under the hood of the dual Suburban. The limited information we have does not refer to any modifications, but even the stock powertrain has plenty of oats.

few miles

In 2022, 42,000 miles is the mark of a cream puff, especially for a platform that is approaching 40 years old.

Nothing is perfect

We assume this image was included in the photo set for “full disclosure” purposes – the 1986 Chevy Suburban is doubly super clean, but it’s not 100% spotless, as evidenced by the crack running down the along the dashboard cover.

Suburban doubling

This 1986 Chevy Suburban isn’t the “best” truck out of all the custom rigs up for auction, but to us it’s very cool. You just don’t see a suburban double (what’s a double, anyway?) anywhere, so its rarity makes it worthy of our spotlight for Mecum Auctions’ Glendale, Arizona event.
