  • Andrew Lambrecht decided to sell his 2016 Chevrolet Volt last year when the used car market was hot.
  • He sold it for $20,338 through Vroom in December. He originally bought it for $15,000.
  • He used the money to put down a deposit on a new Mini Cooper SE.

Today, buying a car at a reasonable price is almost impossible. Whether you’re essentially paying original price for a years-old vehicle or facing ridiculous markups on new cars at dealerships, it’s obvious that times have changed for potential car buyers.

However, one person’s loss can be another’s gain, and if you time the market correctly, you can make a substantial profit. That’s precisely what I did — and there’s still time for you to do the same.

In September 2020, I purchased a used 2016 Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid for $15,000. Its original MSRP was $40,280, so it had lost almost 63% of its value by the time I bought it. Most Used Cars lose about 60% of their value within five years of ownership in a normal market, so the Volt stayed in line with the average.

Based on its rate of depreciation, I planned to keep it for about a year or two and expected to list it for sale for around $10,000-12,000. But things went much better than expected.

During the first two years of the pandemic, used car prices rose intermittently and then remained at that level, which price timeline look more like a staircase than a gradual upward slope. Still, the online trade-in value of my Volt hovered around $12,000 in the winter of 2021.

To track its values, I used both vroom and Carvana’s online recovery tools. Both of these websites offer you an offer instantly, so you don’t have to wait at a dealership for a

Evaluation

or something like that. Of all the online car buying websites, I have found that these two offer the most competitive values, with CarMax usually offering me less.

As the pandemic progressed, prices soared even more. When times got uncertain for many Americans in the summer of 2020, demand for new vehicles has fallen. Earlier the same year, when China went into lockdown, its semiconductor production has declined. These chips are a big deal – they power everything from the infotainment system to semi-automated driving features like adaptive cruise control or lane-keep assist.

But in 2021, car sales started to rise again – especially in the electric vehicle space – but there just weren’t enough semiconductors for these new cars. While the vehicles rolling off the assembly line were essentially complete, they were just missing a chip.

Many automakers couldn’t keep up with demand, so shoppers had to revert to buying used cars due to low dealer inventory. Couple that with inflation, and used car buyers faced massive price hikes.

Current vehicle owners, meanwhile, faced an unprecedented opportunity to sell their cars at a net gain, a feat that very few vehicles could achieve in the past.

Last spring, I started noticing an increase in the trade-in values of my Volt. In mid-March 2021, Carvana offered me $14,643 for my Volt, which was very close to what it was worth when I bought it. I wanted to trade it in for a newer BMW i3 electric sedan, but decided to hang in there and see how far it would go. What I would soon discover was that while I was holding trades, the values of the BMW i3 were rising just as steadily, so it was essentially a non-zero-sum game.

At the end of April, Carvana presented an offer of $15,083 for my car. It was the first time that I received an amount greater than what I had bought it for. I was tempted to take the money and run away, but once again I decided to wait.

Over the summer, its value has steadily increased. In September, Carvana’s $15,000 turned into $16,432. As my desire to flip it for a profit proliferated, I decided to hold it longer. At the end of December, his Carvana value started to drop, but his Vroom value suddenly increased dramatically.

Several days after Christmas, Vroom was offering an unbeatable value of $20,338. I quickly accepted it.

A few days later, a contractor picked up my Volt from a tray, and within a week, Vroom sent me the check. Although I probably could have sold it myself for a bit more, this process was seamless and easy. Excluding taxes and maintenance fees, which were around $800, I made $5,338 off my original purchase price.

Since I sold my car when values were high, it would make sense that I would have to pay more for my next vehicle as well. While I really wanted to buy a BMW i3, I wasn’t looking to pay north of $25,000 for a four-year-old car.

However, one car I had my eye on was the Mini Cooper SE – an electric two-door with an advertised range of 114 miles. BMW owns Mini and the Cooper SE shares many of its components with the BMW i3, its German cousin.

More importantly, an all-new Mini Cooper SE with the $7,500 Federal EV

tax credit

costs about the same as a used BMW i3. For me, it would have been crazy to buy a used BMW i3 when I could get a brand new electric Mini Cooper for practically the same price.

The 2023 Mini Cooper SE starts at $34,750. However, at select Mini dealerships, like my local center in Charlotte, you can special order the base “Signature” trim for $30,750. It lacks some features like premium audio, a sunroof, and some paint options, but to me, it’s worth the $4,000 in savings. He was also eligible for the $7,500 federal tax credit, but note: you must pay at least $7,500 in taxes to get the full benefits.

My local Mini center charged an additional $1,396 in dealership fees, totaling the door price to $33,065 including taxes and state registration. Factoring in the tax credit, my 2023 Mini Cooper actually costs $25,565.

I put down the $250 deposit on the Mini, so hopefully it will arrive this summer. With an opportunity like this, you better make the most of it, and the electric Cooper was the most financially sound way to tap into the market.

Everyone’s situation is different, but if you’re looking to trade in your current vehicle, it’s worth taking a look to see how much you can get.

Which electric trucks got a surge of new bookings after a big price hike?

Could future electric cars do without friction brakes as we know them?

Here’s our look back at the week inside out – right here at Green Car Reports—for the week ending May 13, 2022.

In a long-awaited first review of the F-150 Lightning electric truck, we found even more confidence and refinement than expected, along with some hints of good range and efficiency. It doesn’t reinvent the pickup, but it does make it better in almost every way.

Lordstown Stamina

It was a whole week of twists and turns. The drama of the week award goes to those in Ohio. Things appeared to be touching and going earlier in the week for Lordstown Motors as it still could not signal a final deal with Taiwan’s Foxconn with the terms of their deal just days from the deadline. But with the completion of the sale of the former GM factory to Hon Hai Technology Group, as it is otherwise known, the Lordstown Endurance electric pickup is going into production later this year. It also led to a reaffirmation of Foxconn’s plans to act as contract manufacturer for the upcoming $29,900 Fisker Pear EV from 2024.

In a rumor that turned into reality, Volkswagen confirmed it was reviving the Scout name – yes, the old International Harvester SUV – for an entire brand of US-focused electric SUVs. Will Scout help VW supply mainstream electric vehicles, or will it be another premium niche brand? We’ll see soon.

Teaser for the modern Scout electric SUV and pickup

Teaser for the modern Scout electric SUV and pickup

Since Rivian’s clumsy price hike in March, the electric truck brand has seen 10,000 new bookings, double the trucks it has built since September, at an astonishing average price of $93,000. This is quite a testament to the demand and appeal of these trucks.

Bollinger Motors has announced that Roush Industries will be its manufacturing partner for electric trucks, including platforms and chassis cabs. Bollinger will source the materials, while Roush will assemble them in Michigan. And sorry, the B1 electric SUV and the B2 electric pickup remain postponed indefinitely.

BMW has no plans to give up the gasoline portion of its sales anytime soon, company CEO Oliver Zipse pointed out during a recent roundtable with Green Car Reports and others. coming i5, it makes sense. But Zipse explained more recently that the company’s next Neue Klasse will be different, potentially splitting the 3-Series segment with entirely different gas and electric cars.

DS E Tense Performance prototype

DS E Tense Performance prototype

In one of this week’s most popular tech pieces, we looked at a DS Automobiles prototype from Stellantis that takes Formula E technology and takes one-pedal driving one step further, essentially asking if the electric vehicles of the future could do without friction brakes entirely. .

Three major two-way electric vehicle charging pilot programs have been announced by California utility Pacific Gas & Electric. They will test technologies that could help smooth the grid and prevent brownouts, with up to 1,000 residential customers and hundreds of business customers.

Electric vehicle charging stations remain a potential target for hackers, warns a recent report that appears to rely heavily on the cybersecurity industry looking to sell services. Will charger security become an issue for companies with fleets and centralized smart charging?

Tesla Model 3 2022

Tesla Model 3 2022

During boosting, the “high temperature” of the infotainment screen on some Tesla models may cause the system to slow down or restart, temporarily rendering certain safety-critical features unavailable. This is another item that is causing recall paperwork with the feds but is being addressed with a live fix.

Tesla would push for accelerated development of Panasonic’s larger 4680 cell format, although the supplier has repeatedly pointed out the technical challenges involved.

With a range of 230 miles but a combined weight rating of up to 82,000 pounds, the production version of the semi-electric Freightliner eCascadia revealed this week is a full-fledged Class 8 commercial truck, though it’s intended for short haul . With over a million miles and a “holistic ecosystem” of charging and services on the way, it’s in production later this year as we wait for the Tesla Semi.

2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV Redline Edition

2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV Redline Edition

GM only recently started building 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV models again, but it’s ready to move on and has just unveiled a new Redline Edition for the second year of the Bolt EUV. The rest of the 2023 Chevy Bolt EV lineup continues with, yes, a new shade of red.

Could hydrogen fuel cell conversions of older diesel tractor-trailers help clean up corporate fleets sooner? Two solutions revealed this week could help put new technologies into aging rigs.

1991 Nissan FEV concept electric car

Last weekend, we looked at one of the many quirks in electric vehicle history. Long before the Tesla Roadster or the Nissan Leaf, the Nissan FEV electric car could have rivaled the GM EV1. Never more than a prototype, it was a harbinger of the electric vehicle era with its aerodynamic design, heat pump, low rolling resistance tires, solar-powered accessories, energy-intensive construction aluminum and even something akin to fast charging.

Automatic remarketing recognizes the 2022 Women in Remarketing winners in the May issue of the magazineand post Q&As with each of these outstanding leaders on the website.

Next up is Janet Fedorowich, assistant vice president of national dealer and commercial accounts at Manheim/Cox Automotive.

Automotive Remarketing: What is the biggest trend you are seeing in automotive remarketing/wholesale this year?

Janet Fedorowich: The supply of new vehicles remains close to historic lows with no relief in sight. Rising gas prices, chip shortages, and inflation threatening supply chains are giving us tons of uncertainty in the auto industry. One of the main trends discussed is that dealers are finding new opportunities to buy mainstream cars to increase vehicle supply. Another key trend is the adoption of electric vehicles and theories about who will dominate the electric car market. Tesla mostly dominated; however, other OEMs are moving in quickly. Assessing battery life and the impact on resale values will be a huge priority as these vehicles enter the market.

AR: What impact has technology/innovation had the most on your specific area of remarketing/wholesale?

Fedorowich: Technology and innovation have allowed a hybrid sales model to become more acceptable. Buyers are more comfortable buying digitally with insurance programs that offer guarantees to the buyer. However, there remains a segment of vehicles where buyers prefer on-lane offerings so they can touch and inspect vehicles. Innovative startups have disrupted the auction industry by creating platforms, without the cost of physical locations, that simplify the remarketing process, making things very competitive.

AR: What career advice would you give to someone new to the industry?

Federowich: This amazing industry presents opportunities across all industries and, more than ever, we encourage diversity to drive this business forward. The automotive industry is constantly changing, and innovation and courage are needed to remain a dominant player. Be prepared to embrace change and take risks while soaking up as much industry knowledge as possible. Always network and promote an inclusive environment to capitalize on the differences that will allow you to be a better contributor.

AR: What is your proudest moment/achievement, career-wise?

Federowich: My proudest moment is the depth of the relationships I have built over the past 30 years of working for Cox Automotive. I had the privilege of working with our National Commercial and Dealer Accounts. By working with unique perspectives and strategies, I have been exposed to many challenges that have allowed me to be a trusted resource and help implement change.

I have been fortunate to have held various positions while learning from some of the top leaders in the industry. In addition, my leadership journey has allowed me to develop some of the best talents and I am extremely proud to see them flourish both personally and professionally.

The idea of concept cars (or the concept of idea cars?) has been around for a long time. A concept car is a great way to gauge people’s reaction to new and sometimes revolutionary car designs, which was even more true before the advent of the internet. And, after all, it’s a lot cheaper to build a few than to commit to a full year of production on a car that might turn out to be a dud.

What What happens to concept cars when they’re done showing?

Unfortunately, most concept cars are lost. Why? Well, since most don’t carry real VIN numbers, they can’t be sold or even driven on the roads. So, once their work is done, manufacturers either have to pay to store them or simply send them to the grinder after being stripped of any useful bits. Some manage to survive thanks to devious employees, and some notable ones have been placed in the historical collections of the makers, but they usually cease to exist. Such was the case with the original 1954 Corvette Corvair concept cars. It seems five (a number open to debate) were built by GM to show off the fastback body style, and the first was unveiled at the 1954 Motorama Show. held at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York. GM liked to make variations of its new Corvette, including a convertible, a sporty fastback and a nice two-door station wagon. Most simply disappeared, although the station wagon eventually transformed into a full-size vehicle called the Nomad. The fastback body style shown here was retained, but was produced as an entirely different car than the four-seat, rear-mounted engine, and futuristic design you see here, called the Corvair (a portmanteau of “Corvette ” and “Bel Air”).

This 1954 Corvette was hand-built to replicate the Motorama Corvair coupe and was built by Brett Henderson of Blue Flame Restorations, with every effort made to faithfully reproduce the concept car. It features stock 1956 rear axle and a set of AC Delco shock absorbers, as well as stock 1954 front suspension and steering parts. stopping with more confidence, while the 265 ci (4.3 liter) V-8 engine is powered by a four-barrel Holley carburetor and is backed by a 700R four-speed automatic transmission linked to a shifter Two-speed Powerglide. The 15-inch steel wheels are wrapped in a set of vintage Firestone whitewall tires, giving it even more vintage originality. Finished in a fresh coat of Crystal Red, the interior uses custom-designed Al Knoch bucket seats, custom glass, gauges from a 1956 installed in the 1954 factory dash, and more. Entered in the 2015 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, the car was also named a personal favorite by legendary custom car builder George Barris at the Corvette Funfest, also in 2015.

Why Did GM ever produce the Corvette Corvair?

When the 1953 Corvette was released, its styling and fiberglass construction were revolutionary, but only 300 were sold. It looked amazing, but compared to the sports cars coming out of Europe, competitive performance was sadly missing from the mix, in part because of the Blue Flame straight-six engine and two-speed Powerglide automatic transmission. Without a manual transmission to compete with German, Italian and British offerings, the Corvette was not a viable choice for many. As such, sales were poor, and Chevrolet considered killing the Corvette.

Enter Zora Arkus-Duntov (remember him and his Ardun flathead Ford OHV engine kit?). Zora knew a few things about performance and had big ideas about adding V-8 engines and manual transmissions to the Corvette so it could better compete in the sports car segment. However, his rescue of the Corvette didn’t happen fast enough to save the Corvette Corvair design, and the concept cars were consigned to oblivion. The red pictured here disappeared right after the Motorama show, and a Seafoam Green version (some say it was actually the same car, repainted) was shown around the country before doing the same disappearing act.
