Tesla continues to dominate the U.S. battery electric vehicle market, with its Model Y and Model 3 being by far the bestsellers in the emerging BEV segment. But an assortment of competitors are racing to catch up, including Ford Motor Co., it’s Mustang Mach-E third on the all-electric sales charts.

Tesla is still the dominant player in the electric vehicle market right now, with the Model Y being the best-selling electric vehicle in the United States.

Several things are reshaping the race for dominance in the BEV market. These include a surge in demand for all-electric models, rapid product expansion giving buyers many new options, and an aggressive game of catch-up being played by traditional automakers like Ford, Hyundai, Kia, General Motors and Stellantis. Add the arrival of new all-electric entrants such as Rivian and Lucid, and things get even more competitive.

And while Tesla is expected to continue to increase its overall volume, its market share is plummeting. Where it accounted for more than three-quarters of all new BEVs sold in the United States last year.

According to Morgan Stanley, Tesla made up just over 60% of the U.S. market through the end of July, and some analysts expect it to fall below 40% by the end of 2023, one analyst very respected anticipating that he might dive. to as low as 11% by 2025.

go all in

The automotive industry is betting big on the switch to battery-electric propulsion. Combined worldwide spending will exceed at least $500 billion by the end of the decade, according to a study published earlier this year by AlixPartners.

They really have no choice. European regulators effectively want to end sales of new vehicles with internal combustion engines by 2035. This is the same target now set by the State of California, with no less than 17 other states set to adopt its zero-emissions guidelines. President Joe Biden, meanwhile, has set a goal of achieving a 50% market share for plug-in vehicles by 2030.

Tesla Model 3
The Tesla Model 3 is the second best seller in the US electric vehicle segment.

Although the US market still has a long way to go, proponents insist it is moving in the right direction. BEVs accounted for just 1% of the market in 2019. That figure rose to around 7.5% in August, according to Steve Majoros, Chevrolet’s chief marketing officer. In terms of vehicle registrations, they accounted for 4.9% of new vehicles in the first seven months of this year, nearly double the 2.6% share through July 2021.

Still the best dog

Who will win the race, however, is far from certain. So far, Tesla has clearly been in the catbird seat. And, although it faces many new competitors, it remains the dominant player.

American motorists bought 116,673 Tesla Model Y SUVs between January and July this year, along with 108,809 Model 3 sedans. Sales of the automaker’s original Model S and X models lost momentum, generating a total of 34,254 sales during the period. Significantly, that was enough to continue dominating the US premium vehicle sector, which includes mainstream products like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and BMW 7-Series.

But a closer look reveals that a lawsuit is pending. Ford’s Mach-E generated 22,525 sales in the seven months to July, surpassing sales of the gas-powered Mustang coupe in some months.

2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E GT Performance Pack - side deck
Tesla has more than 60% of the U.S. sales market, but rivals like the Ford Mustang Mach-E are making inroads.

Ford’s new Lightning has yet to break into BEV’s top 10 sales charts, but may soon rise to the top. After a slow ramp-up and continued expansion of its manufacturing plant, the all-electric pickup could see its production capacity increased to 150,000 or more per year. Ford claims to have at least 250,000 orders for the Lightning on hand. The company also has innovated Friday on BlueOval City, the 6-square-mile campus that will build more electric vehicles as well as battery packs. It should be operational by 2026.

Tesla reportedly has reservations for up to 1 million Cybertrucks, but it has repeatedly delayed the launch of the vehicle and many observers wonder if it can actually get close to that number that will translate into purchases. One of the main reasons is that there is a flood of competition ahead. According to the Detroit Bureau’s tally, there could be as many as a dozen or more all-electric pickup trucks available by the middle of the decade. These will include the Lightning, GMC Hummer and Sierra SUV, Chevrolet Silverado EV, Ram 1500 EV and entries from Toyota, Hyundai and others.

Notably, this could include multiple mics from startups like Rivian’s R1T.

In total, the number of long-range BEVs has increased from around 15 at the end of 2021 to 50 planned by the end of this year. And AutoForecast Solutions estimated the likely count at more than 140 by 2025.

Add to range?

Hyundai Ioniq 5 2022
With a new entry like the 2022 Ioniq 5, Hyundai and its sibling, Kia, hold three of the top 10 electric vehicle sales locations in the United States

Tesla, however, has few new products coming. Beyond the Cybertruck, it only confirmed the addition of a second-generation Roadster. And CEO Elon Musk said earlier this year that he had indefinitely delayed development of more affordable models than today’s Model 3 and Model Y.

Currently, the average BEV rolls off the showroom floor for around $65,000 according to Cox Automotive and Edmunds estimates. General Motors and Honda, among others, hope to finally offer products that can target more traditional buyers. The Chevrolet Equinox GM announced last month is promised to start at just over $30,000.

Electric vehicle subscription startup Autonomy sees Tesla’s share already falling, even as it ramps up production at its second US assembly plant in Austin, Texas. That should drop it to 40% or less by the end of 2022, according to Autonomy chief analyst Jesse Toprak. Its dominance, he told Automotive News, will be “increasingly challenged.”

And not just by Ford or GM. South Korean siblings Hyundai and Kia now own three of the 10 best-selling BEVs in the US market, the sixth-ranked Hyundai Ioniq, and the Kia EV6 and Niro ranked seventh and tenth, respectively.

Kia EV6 2022
The Kia EV6 joins its South Korean sibling to take a significant chunk of Tesla’s sales lead.

Toprak isn’t the only analyst who sees Tesla facing an increasingly difficult challenge.

“Tesla didn’t move fast enough…to close the door” on its competitors, John Murphy, senior automotive analyst for Bank of America Research, said during a presentation of its annual Car Wars study in June. Murphy predicts that Tesla’s share will drop to just 11% by 2025. Over the same period, General Motors and Ford Motor Co. will see their share of the emerging BEV market reach around 15% each.

There are a number of things that could impact the shape of the US BEV market by the middle of the decade. Tesla could surprise the market with more products. And it may prove more difficult than expected for its competitors to attract both luxury and mainstream buyers.

There is also the continued shortage of semiconductors, as well as other supply chain disruptions. Legacy manufacturers, as well as some of the fledgling EV makers, have struggled to simply fulfill their current orders because they lack the necessary parts and components. That led GM to cut orders this week for the big GMC Hummer EV pickup. It has 90,000 advance orders but no specific target date to deliver those vehicles to customers.

The chip shortage is expected to stretch into 2023. But automakers have already started lining up increased supplies, and with more new entrants, more new products and increased capacity, they seem ready to pose a serious collective threat to Tesla in the future.

CHARLOTTE, NC — NASCAR champion Kyle Larson has signed a three-year contract extension through 2026 with Hendrick Motorsports, the team that welcomed him last season after a nearly year-long suspension.

The expansion announced Friday includes sponsor HendrickCars.com, which will sponsor the No. 5 Chevrolet for 35 races per season. Larson’s extension and sponsorship renewal are concurrent. The initial deal for HendrickCars.com to become Larson’s title sponsor was announced last July when Rick Hendrick’s online automotive site saw massive traffic spikes every time it was featured on Larson’s car.

Larson, 30, was suspended for most of 2020 for using a racial slur and lost his job at Chip Ganassi Racing. Hendrick took him on when the suspension was lifted, and Larson won 10 races last season and his first Cup title.

“When Kyle joined our team, expectations were very high both inside and outside the organization. To say he exceeded them would be an understatement,” said Rick Hendrick. “Not only has Kyle proven himself as a champion driver, but he has performed at a championship level outside of the race car. We are proud to continue our relationship and to see him represent our team and our brands in such a so positive. The coming years are very bright.”

HendrickCars.com will also continue to support Larson in his non-NASCAR races.

“I can’t explain how much this opportunity means,” Larson said. “The chance to compete for the best team and the best sponsors in racing is something every driver dreams of. I’m honored to have amazing people in my corner and the incredible support of so many fans.”

Hendrick Automotive Group said it measured a 3-to-1 return on its marketing investment in NASCAR via HendrickCars.com. The website’s busiest days in 2022 have been associated with NASCAR-related initiatives, and the company has also used Larson as a spokesperson for its corporate social responsibility programs.

Larson heads into Saturday night’s playoff race at eighth-ranked Bristol Motor Speedway. The last four drivers of the field of 16 drivers will be eliminated on Saturday evening.

Even as battery costs rise, automakers are rolling out more affordable electric vehicles that should broaden their appeal to a larger group of buyers. The latest came Thursday from General Motors, a Chevrolet Equinox small SUV with a starting price of around $30,000 and a range per charge of 250 miles (402 kilometers). You can get 300 miles if you pay more. GM won’t release exact pricing for the Equinox EV until it goes on sale around this time next year. But the SUV is at the bottom of the price list of electric vehicles sold in the United States by Edmunds.com. The average cost of an EV is now around $65,000. Industry analysts say hitting a price tag of around $30,000 and a range per charge of nearly 300 miles is key to enticing traditional buyers to ditch gas-powered vehicles.

Next month, the Texas Department of Transportation will begin looking for companies interested in helping establish a statewide network of electric vehicle charging stations, and transportation officials in the Waco area will be asked to recommend sites in McLennan County.

The National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Formula Program has earmarked $407.8 million through 2026 for the Texas plan, which will partner with companies to pay 80% of the cost of charging infrastructure.

The state’s plan will ensure that all interstate highways have DC fast-charging stations at least every 50 miles. Other state highways would have stations every 70 miles, and 254 county seats would have charging stations.

Each connector would be capable of supporting at least 150 kilowatts, enough to boost a battery from 10% to 80% in 30 minutes, according to the Texas plan. That would give an electric vehicle an additional 120 to 200 miles of range.

People also read…

Federal approval of the state plan is expected by the end of the month, allowing TxDOT to move forward in October to issue solicitations for private partners.

At first, electric vehicles were only available to those who could live with short-range econoboxes. Then came expensive luxury cars, and a few vans and delivery vans. Now they’re heading into the heart of the US auto market – the compact SUV. And many of the new entries sold or on the way have the range, price and features to compare to their gas-powered rivals. Some are proving very popular. Ford’s $45,000+ Mustang Mach-E is sold out for the model year. General Motors’ Chevrolet brand introduced an electric version of the Blazer on Monday night, starting at around $45,000 including shipping. Coming next year is an electric Chevy Equinox and a number of others. “The intent and pricing of this product is definitely to make it more available to more traditional buyers,” said Steve Majoros, chief marketing officer for Chevrolet, of the Blazer EV. All can travel around 300 miles per charge and are aimed at the small SUV segment, the largest part of the US market with around 20% of new vehicle sales.

During the program’s multi-year rollout, the state will work with regional metropolitan planning organizations to evaluate and award projects, Waco MPO Director Mukesh Kumar told the MPO board Thursday.

MPO Board Chairman Jim Holmes, who sits on the Waco City Council, said the process will depend on what companies are willing to participate.

“I think it’s great that we have a say in the destination,” Holmes said.

The state’s electric vehicle station plan shows DFO-based projects would begin within a few years, after interstate highways, designated as “electric alternative fuel corridors,” are built with stations. McLennan County could be eligible for $1.8 million from the program, according to the plan.

The plan, including interactive maps of existing and potential charging stations, is available at https://www.txdot.gov/projects/projects-studies/statewide/texas-electric-vehicle-planning-03-22-22. html.

The Waco area offers a handful of charging options, including a six-charger DC fast-charging station at the Bellmead Walmart on I-35, according to Chevrolet.com. A few hotels and car dealerships also offer limited electric vehicle charging options to their guests, and the Collin Street Bakery on I-35 in Bellmead offers Tesla Superchargers, designed specifically for Tesla vehicles.

Also at Thursday’s DFO meeting, the board received an update on other federal funding opportunities on the horizon.

The carbon reduction program is funded by the same Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act as the electric vehicle initiative and will provide DFO with $549,000 per year for projects over the next five years.

“It’s a very small amount of money, but when used for low-cost, high-impact programs, it could be very effective,” Kumar said.

Cities in McLennan County are invited to submit proposals to DFO for review and possible approval in January. The projects require a 20% counterpart from local governments.

Eligible projects would be judged on criteria such as reduced carbon emissions, equity, impact on future generations, link to land use and readiness.

DFO also this month requested $560,000 from the Federal Highway Administration’s Safe Streets and Roads for All program to develop a plan to identify and address traffic hazards in the area. Pricing is expected to be announced late this year or early next year, Kumar said.

Last fall, General Motors CEO Mary Barra made a bold prediction: By the middle of this decade, her company would sell more electric vehicles in the United States than Tesla, the global sales leader. Since then, inflation has skyrocketed, interest rates are rising, material costs have skyrocketed, and a global shortage of computer chips still holds back the assembly lines of GM and other companies. Yet even as it faces immense economic forces that could push many buyers out of the new-vehicle market, Barra is delivering on its promise.

Ford Motor, a world-renowned American automaker, is moving towards fungible tokens and the metaverse as it files 19 trademark applications for its American car brands with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

Ford plunging into the metaverse and the NFT or Web3 ecosystem came after the company led by Ford Motor CEO Jim Farley and Ford executive chairman Bill Ford made massive layoffs in a bid to cut spending of the company, which looked like a company redirection of sorts.

Ford Motor to roll out digital products and entertainment services

With reference to the filed documentation, Ford plans to offer SUVs, pickup trucks, automobiles, and trucks as downloadable text, artwork, video, and audio files in NFTs.

More so, Ford Motor will also offer downloadable virtual goods used primarily in virtual worlds such as automobiles, trucks, SUVs, vans, gears or clothing, as well as vehicle accessories and parts.

The company also plans to host virtual car shows online through Augment Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR). BBased on the brands submitted, Ford Motor may offer NFTs in a specific online marketplace allowing the company to sell virtual cars and wearables under Ford, Troller and Lincoln.

USPTO Registered Trademark Attorney Mike Kondoudis announced on Twitter on Wednesday that Ford Motor has filed 19 trademark applications covering car brands under its wings such as Lincoln, Mustang, Explorer, Bronco and F-150. Lighting; to only cite a few.

Ford follows the example of Chevy, Lambo and Bentley

Ford Motor appears to be following the lead of other US auto giants like Chevrolet which hosted an NFT event in June 2022 with a Corvette Z06 NFT in lime green which also comes with a free 2023 Corvette Z06, a physical or real vehicle.

Chevrolet’s auction was launched on SuperRare, a famous NFT marketplace with an opening bid set at ETH 206. However, despite Chevrolet’s aggressive marketing and promotion, the auction either had crickets or amassed no no offer.

Earlier, luxury car brands such as Lamborghini and Bentley have already launched their respective NFT collectibles. Other car brands like Hyundai, Toyota and Nissan have also announced their intention to join the metaverse and the NFT space.

The 2023 Equinox EV gives us a familiar Chevrolet SUV look in an all-new all-electric vehicle. It’s also the first truly mainstream battery-electric SUV, with pricing starting at around $30,000 – before tax incentives.

At an average of $65,000, today’s typical battery electric vehicle (BEV) is well beyond the reach of the typical American car buyer. But as GM rolls out an assortment of premium electric vehicles, including the more than $300,000 Cadillac Celestiq, it’s also targeting entry-level buyers with products like the new Chevrolet Equinox EV, which will cost “around $30,000.” $” when it hits the showrooms. year.

While it was late to the long-range electric vehicle market, General Motors is in a race to catch up with industry leader Tesla, as well as key competitors like Ford, Hyundai and Volkswagen. It plans to deploy at least 30 BEVs by the middle of the decade. And they’ll cover a wide range of brands and product segments, from ultra-exotics like the Cadillac Celestiq to full-size pickups like the GMC Electric Hummer and Chevrolet Silverado EV.

But the brand of bow ties does not forget people on a budget who have traditionally made up a large part of its clientele. It recently lowered the price of its first long-range model, the EV bolt, at a starting price of $25,600. And coming in fall 2023, it will introduce another “affordable” option – an all-electric version of its popular Equinox SUV.

Equinox EV: $30,000

When GM’s biggest brand started teasing the 2023 Chevrolet Equinox EV last year, it said the cost would be “about $30,000.” “And we’re still at that point,” Scott Bell, vice president of Global Chevrolet, confirmed at a news conference late last month.

As with the conventionally powered Chevrolet Equinox, the EV model will enter what Bell expects to become “not only the largest but perhaps the most competitive segment” in an EV market that is expected to grow rapidly over the next the next decade.

Where BEVs made up just 1% of new vehicle sales in the US in 2019, that’s now hovering around 6%. And, according to analysts like John Murphy of Bank of America Researchit could reach 20% by 2025.

So Chevy knows it will take not only affordability, but plenty of features to appeal to buyers, especially those considering an electric vehicle for the first time.

All-new vehicle, familiar styling

Chevrolet Equinox EV 2023 - 3RS before 3-4

A quick look at the Equinox should strike a chord. There are a lot of design similarities between the current gas-powered model and the new one that runs on lithium-ion batteries. They feature a narrow silhouette, with coke bottle carving on the door panels and a subtle curve on the roofline – which will be available on select two-tone trim levels.

Another key difference: the EV adopts a large C-pillar rather than the rear half-glass on today’s model. The overhangs are also shorter than on the petrol model.

The Equinox EV’s hood is a bit shorter – a common design feature on battery models today, as there’s no internal combustion under the hood. (Chevrolet officials are yet to say whether or not there will be a “frunk” or a front trunk.) Instead, some of the engine bay space has been reallocated to the passenger compartment.

Also missing a traditional grille because there is no need for cooling air under the hood. Instead, there’s a sealed panel accented by a wide light bar and a backlit Chevrolet logo.

Small air intakes under the bumper provide cooling air for the underlying Ultium architecture on which the Equinox is mounted.

Equinox EV range and power

The platform is flexible and will eventually be shared with a wide range of GM BEVs, entry-level models – excluding older ones EV bolt— to luxury products like new Cadillac Lyriq SUV. It offers great flexibility in terms of battery size and powertrain layout. At Chevy, for example, the larger and more expensive Blazer EV will have three option packages and also offer front-, rear- or all-wheel-drive configurations.

The 2023 Equinox will offer two different battery packs and a choice of front or all-wheel drive. Depending on the package, buyers will get between 250 and 300 miles of range according to GM’s initial estimates.

Don’t expect the kind of performance Chevy expects to deliver with the Blazer EV, which is a 557 horsepower SS model that promises to perform 0-60 launches in “under 4 seconds”. But the Equinox EV will not be outdone.

The FWD package will use a single electric motor producing 210 horsepower and 242 pound-feet of torque. The optional eAWD system will add a second motor to the rear axle, with the combination delivering 290 horsepower and 346 pound-feet of torque. In comparison, the gas-powered Equinox develops 170 horsepower and 203 lb-ft thanks to its 1.5L turbocharged engine.

Quick Charge Equinox EV

One of the features of the EV will be One-pedal driving, which allows a motorist to slow down or even stop the Equinox by simply modulating the throttle, rather than having to jump over and release the brakes. The system relies on brake regeneration, which recovers energy normally lost during braking and coasting, returning it to the battery to extend range.

(Picture/Chevrolet)

The Equinox EV comes with a standard 11.5kW Level 2 charger that can increase range by 34 miles per hour of charging when plugged into a 220V system. An upgraded 19.2kW charger brings that range up to 51 miles per hour. And the electric SUV can use the latest public fast chargers up to 150kW, adding 70 miles of range in as little as 10 minutes.

GM is spending millions to help establish a national network charging network, and officials hinted that Equinox buyers could get free billing as part of the purchase price, like other new models. Stay tuned for more details.

Tech-laden, as you’d expect

As has become the norm in the electric vehicle market, the 2023 Chevy Equinox will feature many digital technologies. The sporty cabin will be available with an infotainment touchscreen up to 17.7 inches as well as a digital gauge cluster. Look for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

And the SUV will offer as an option Super Cruise, GM’s hands-free driving system. The automaker recently announced that it is set to double the range Super Cruise can operate to around 400,000 miles. This will now include a number of undivided two-lane roads, such as portions of California’s scenic Pacific Coast Highway and old Route 66.

A huge range of advanced driver assistance systems will also be offered, with a fine mix depending on the trim level.

2023 Chevy Equinox EV: Pricing and Availability

2023 Chevrolet Equinox EV - 1LT side

Chevy officials have high hopes for the Equinox, which Bell says is “a game changer for us and the industry.” Certainly, this will give Chevrolet a head start on its competitors on the cost side. Although larger and better equipped, you’ll still have to shell out $65,990 to access the base version of the Tesla Model Y.

And other electric SUVs, like the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, Mustang Mach-Eand Volkswagen ID.4 – cost at least $10,000 more than Chevrolet suggests Equinox start it.

What’s not yet clear is how the recently revised federal tax incentives for electric vehicles will play into the picture. GM and Tesla both lost their credits after crossing a sales threshold.
