Birmingham arson and death investigation underway

UPDATE 8/9: Birmingham Police have upgraded the investigation into Tuesday morning’s arson death to a homicide and are now looking for a person of interest in connection with the case. Get the latest update in the video above. Officer Truman Fitzgerald said detectives had identified Youitt De Witt Jones, 35, as a person of interest. Jones is a black male and is approximately 6 feet tall and 185 pounds. Fitzgerald posted two photos of Jones on Tuesday. An older photo of Jones with dreadlocks, which he no longer has, and a newer photo of him with a shaved head. Birmingham Police reported on Tuesday evening that the lorry had recently been recovered in a separate incident. A new description of the vehicle was not given. He is considered armed and dangerous. Birmingham Police are looking for Youitt Jones, 35, in connection with a homicide investigation after a body was found inside a burnt-out house in west Birmingham on Tuesday morning.

Jones was originally scheduled to travel in a dark brown 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 CREW truck with Alabama license plate ISA2106, but Birmingham police reported Tuesday night that the truck was recently recovered in a separate incident. A new vehicle description was not given.

He is considered armed and dangerous. If you see him, immediately call 911 or send an anonymous report to Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
